"We will work closely with colleagues in the devolved administrations to identify these, so that joint action can be taken where appropriate and legislative opportunities provided for the devolved administrations where . . . new powers are created for England". I suggest to my hon. Friend that that presents an excellent opportunity to introduce legislation for smoke-free public places and workplac... 18 Mar 2005 AYE

Far more important than that almost but not quite arcane point about the standard of proof is the condition that the suspect must have the best opportunity to answer the case against him. I have been greatly cheered by the attitude of my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary to reviewing the system of special advocates. Will my hon. and learned Friend give way? No, I do not have time and others wan... 9 Mar 2005 NO

I cannot give way to the right hon. Gentleman. I will just complete my five minutes before I resume my place. I realise that he is on the side of the angels but his particular angel is being too naive if he thinks that we are half way near to getting the sort of terrorism legislation that the House should approve, in any circumstances, once it is given the proper time to debate it. I regret that I... 9 Mar 2005 NO

I am not sure about that. We have a healthy eating project together with the Department of Health, we have issued strict guidance to schools and we are working with them to ensure that those standards are reached. We also have the schools food trust. Those measures should help to achieve the major improvement that we want to bring about. We must have a smarter accountability system, where interven... 25 Feb 2005 AYE
Is not the Under-Secretary staggered by the low level of such cases where the minimum sentence is given? What does she put that down to? There have been a mere half a dozen since 2000. The hon. Gentleman is right to say that not many mandatory minimum sentences seem to have been passed by the courts, but I am confident that the courts would not cavalierly reject the mandatory minimum sentence; act... 25 Feb 2005 AYE
On a point of order, Mr. Deputy Speaker. I beg to move, That the House sit in private. Question put forthwith, pursuant to Standing Order No. 163 (Motions to sit in private) :— 25 Feb 2005 NO
The hon. Gentleman is correct. The Minister responded to my hon. Friend the Member for Vale of York (Miss McIntosh) in his usual robust manner. I was one of those who spoke on Second Reading and who made, according to him, an ill-informed contribution. Whether he meant my contribution I am not sure, but I was chief executive of the largest animal welfare charity in Britain, so I understand a bit m... 21 Feb 2005 AYE
